TAWAU, March 5 (Bernama) — When oil palm fetched record prices in late 1990s, most farmers were replacing their cocoa trees with oil palm except for Hamdan Buang who was busy bud grafting his aged cocoa trees with high quality clone.
The trees on the 4.1 hectare farm in Kampung Ranggu here were between 13 and 15 years old then and they were planted by his in-laws.
The in-laws were not keen to switch to oil palm because the cocoa trees were still producing yield and income to the family.
“Even now, my in-laws don’t want to part with cocoa cultivation for nostalgic reasons,” he said.

PUTRAJAYA: The Government has embarked on a programme to educate local authorities on the ways to prune trees so they don't end up looking like bare stumps after each tree-trimming exercise.
Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said under the programme, local authority staff members would be taught the right ways to prune and care for trees as well as pick the right species to be planted at different locations.
He said trees were important because they not only helped to beautify the surroundings but were instrumental in creating cooler conditions.

CAN'T wait to get in on the feed-in-tariff act and start generating your own green electricity? But how exactly do you do it, and how much money do you need to pay?
According to Ahmad Hadri Haris of Pusat Tenaga Malaysia, the process of applying for feed-in tariff will be similar to that of getting a car.
"When you buy a car, the car dealer settles everything for you - from the insurance, the road tax and so on. We are proposing the same concept here. All you have to do is go to a service provider who will be like a car dealer. You key in your details online, and you will know on the spot which tariff you are eligible for. You then go to Tenaga Nasional Bhd to sign a contract, and then apply for a bank loan.

The new feed-in tariff rule will allow anyone to produce green energy and get paid for it.HOW would you like to generate your own electricity, and make money from it? If things go according to plan, the impending introduction of a new feed-in tariff law that is set to revolutionise Malaysia's renewable energy production will make it easy for everyone to generate renewable electricity and sell it back to the national power grid.
With the feed-in tariff (FIT), all you need to do is apply for an account and install a renewable energy generator such as a wind turbine or solar photovoltaic (PV) system, together with a special two meter system in your home.
Of the two meters, one will measure the electricity you use and the other, the renewable electricity you generate and contribute to the grid. When the Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) meter reader comes by, you will receive two bills - one is the usual electricity bill you have to pay to the utility, and the other is for the electricity that it has to pay to you (both bills are kept separate and won't cancel each other out, so if you don't pay your bill, they won't pay you in return).

ARCHITECTURE INSIDE OUT
By MOHAMAD TAJUDDIN MOHAMAD RASDI
Instead of letting old places of prayer fall into disrepair and ruin, why not re-purpose them in ways that would provide an extra service to the community? IT'S a sad state of affairs when there are many mosques in this country that are still in good condition but abandoned and left to rot, many mosques that have been restored to the tune of hundreds of thousands of ringgit and then left unused, and many mosques with great historical value that have been demolished.
This issue came to my attention a few years ago during a conversation with my close friend and colleague, Assoc Prof Dr Syed Ahmad Iskandar Syed. We were talking about his book on the principles of conservation in Islam (Architectural Conservation in Islam: Case Study of the Prophet's Mosque). The gist of the book says artefacts in Islam can be used dynamically in conservation whether by expanding them or by putting them to a different use.

The Museum of Royal Customs showcases Kelantan's regal customs inside an exquisite and beautifully preserved 19th century palace -- Istana Jahar, once the home of three Sultans. Istana Jahar is possibly the most splendid and refined wooden palace in Kelantan. Its elegant proportions and artistic embellishments easily mark it out as a state heritage building.
The palace is widely held up as Kelantanese architecture at its finest, making full use of local timber and traditional ornamentations. The large verandah on the second floor allows air to circulate, while the interior's sensational double-storey oval balcony was the talk of town when it was completed. The unusual indoor air-well remains a conversation piece today.
Istana Jahar, built in 1887, is held up as Kelantanese architecture at its finest.
